Supervisors are the backbone of any operations, in fact they are the most important key link between the management and the workforce, not only they are responsible for the supervising day to day operations at the shop floor level but are also the one connect which takes the management policies and decisions down the line and gather feedback and the results upwards. Supervision is budding leaderships.
In fact the most important line of action for any kind of the operations or industry ,lets take example of the hotel industry , how many transactions are held or directly handled by the executives or the managers , mostly up to 7% , THE SUPERVISORS handle up to 43% of the transactions and portray the brand ambassadors for the company standards.
So what is it which makes a supervisor complete one …..LETS DEFINE IT more simply
SUPERVISOR –STANDS FOR SUPER-VISION
Supervision is a Latin word , super means “ from the above “ and vision means “ to see” so in ordinary terms it means overseeing the activities of the team.
As the name itself indicates the key trait, the person having super –vision, better than the normal worker, a person who can see beyond, who could anticipate the needs and prepare accordingly. Bet it quality management; time management or transaction handling a good supervisor juggles with too many balls at the same time.
Anticipation is one trait which every supervisor should be great at, as it is wisely said
“Failing to plan is planning to fail” a good supervisor is a great planner of the work to be executed, what are the key points to be checked ,monitored and adhered to are the nutshells of his profile.
Overseeing is done at all levels of the management , while first line supervisor oversee the work , performance and quality vis a vis time and resources spent of the operative crew staff , while the middle management supervises the performance of the supervisors and so does the middle management is under the scanner of the top management . it’s a cyclic positioning at one level above and is a continuous process in any operative system.
SUPERVISION METRICS
Apropos the above mentioned Metrics , it is understood the supervision applies to various outlooks of the management in the given operative system , primarily it is considered to maximize the output in given resources with quality ,quantity and time as valuable measurable resources and in Broader outlook it defines the consistent performance and building work culture in company.
PREVALENT TECHNIQUES OF SUPERVISION
CONSULTATIVE –based on the democratic principles, this technique involves participation of workers to find best solutions, and incorporate building team work and common objective approach. The team is instigated to suggest and advice solutions and thus making them part of the process, being employee centric this technique develops favorable work environment and is motivating tool.
AUTHORITATIVE –this is supervisor centric approach, resting all the authorities with the supervisor to act, react and apply. Non prevalent any more in any part of management as this is de motivating employees and results in unfaith full and undisciplined environment.
OBJECTIVE –the best suited technique based on the task , a good supervisor is not based on one technique and has to apply all possible based upon the situation, this technique is objective based and assert giving free hand to worker to maximize quality output in given resources maintaining control of the supervision.
